Ever wonder why your web site does not have many visitors as you would like?  Is your site not showing up very well if at all in the search engine?  The biggest mistake the casual web designer makes is not designing the web site to be search engine friendly.  Let’s talk about a few ways to remedy this problem to boost your hits and search engine ranking.

·        Title-The title of your web site should include keywords in your title sentence.  Do not use a sentence like, “Welcome to my site” or “Home page”.  The search engine will see “Welcome to my site” or “Home page” as the content of your page and it will display that info to the person executing a search.   Use sentences that have keywords in it and make sure the sentence makes sense.  Try to keep the length of the sentence limited to 13 words.

·        Meta Description-This is the second most important tag for search engines.  This is the area where you can describe your web site using keywords in the sentence.  This sentence can be longer that 13 words.

·        Heading Tags-Try to use keywords in your heading tags.  The search engines give more relevance to words inside the heading tag.

·        ALT Image-The purpose of the ALT tag is to describe the contents of the picture that hasn’t loaded yet, and shows up when the mouse pointer is over an image.  Instead of describing just the image, insert keywords as well.  Some search engines will pick up this data as well.

·        Body Text-Make sure to use keywords in the first 25 words of your body text.  This area is looked at by search engines and can increase your ranking.

·        URL-If you have not picked out your domain name yet, try to use your main keyword in the domain name.  This will help you immensely.

·        Meta Keywords-Meta Keywords are not as useful as most people think.  I would suggest inserting some keywords but do not spend much time in this area.  The bottom line here is that it can’t hurt to include the keywords.

Caution-Websites created in Flash and text included in a picture cannot be read by the search engine bots.  Creating effective title and meta description tags will help if you are using a flash site.  Avoid including text in a picture.  If you cannot highlight the text, it cannot be read by the search engine bots.

If you need some visual help, find a web site that is closely related to yours.  In your browser, click view on the browser toolbar and select view source.  You can see what information your competitors use in their optimization.
